There are very few restaurants

that emit romance,

mode and sophistication

in the same breath,

yet at the same time deliver world-class cuisine.

Phuket’s award-winning Da Maurizio may be expensive

by local standards but on the international stage,

and more specifically the Southeast Asian stage, it really is one of the best bargains

for lovers of fine dining, wine and excellent service.

Da Maurizio is situated on the coastal road just north of the Novotel,

heading out of Patong on the way to Kalim.

There is adequate parking on both sides of the road.

Head down the broad stairs into the intimacy of this medium-sized seaside restaurant.

Da Maurizio is by far the best contemporary Italian restaurant in the south of Thailand,

if not in the country and numerous awards have proven this.

We start our gourmet treat with foie gras and candied walnuts atop of cubed

green apples on a crisp homemade raisin bread and port wine reduction.

The fresh al dente fettuccine with marinated and lighted seared yellow fin tuna, capers,

Gaeta olives and rizzoli anchovies was a delight. In short, a great taste combination.

For main course rosemary lamb chops sitting on a mint salsa verde

with lemon yogurt with herbed couscous is a sensation. Of course,

a meal is not complete without dessert and the executive chef makes his own,

including the best tiramisu I have ever tried.

He also suggests on our next visit we should try his degustation menus,

both pasta or traditional. Those with a discerning palette and a taste

for fine dining should pencil this restaurant in as a ‘must do’ during their visit to Phuket.
